How it all started
Benchtop was written in a bike shop in Providence, by the two people who were answering the phone. It is still small, still there, and still built for the counter rather than for the boardroom.
The first version was a spreadsheet. Theo Marsh wrote it in an evening — a shared sheet and a script that sent one text message when a row changed. It was not good software, but the calls halved in a fortnight, and three shops on the same street asked for a copy. Benchtop was incorporated in 2021 and the rest is history.

Founded in 2021
In Providence, Rhode Island, where the company still is. The first customer was the shop the phone calls were counted in, and they are still on it.
Eleven people
Four engineers, two designers, three on support, and the two founders. Seven of the eleven have worked a repair counter, which is not a coincidence.
Four thousand shops
Bicycle workshops, phone counters, watchmakers, luthiers, ski rooms and cobblers, across fourteen countries. Most of them have between one and five benches.
No outside investors
The company is owned by the people who work in it and is funded by what customers pay. That is why there is no enterprise tier and no sales call.
Support answered by builders
Everyone on the team does a shift on support, founders included. It is the shortest route between what a shop needs and what gets written next.
